A New Chapter: Hanging Up the L-Plates
To all my past, present, and future drivers,
After 13 and a half wonderful years as a driving instructor, the time has come for me to officially retire at the end of August due to health issues.
Looking back over the years, it has been an absolute privilege to help so many of you take to the road. We’ve shared it all—the nerve-wracking first lessons, the triumphs, the occasional setbacks, and plenty of tears, laughter, and celebratory hugs along the way. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of learners.
I’m Still Here to Help!
While I am stepping back from full-time instruction, my passion for coaching hasn´t gone anywhere. If you have your own car and are looking for a bit of guidance, I am still available on a more informal basis to offer:

Well what can I say about Phil Shaw? Other than he is the godfather of all Driving Instructors. You wanna pass your driving test then Phil Shaw is your man that can. He cares about each and every student like they are a member of his family. He not only teaches you how to be a safe confident driver but why you should be doing it in the m.s.p.s.l. order, to enable you to become the perfect driver he has taught you to be. I don´t think I have ever met a man who is so passionate about his job. He is always there to help you. Whether it be to pass your theory test i.e test Pro, or a text at stupid o´clock about a question that has been niggling away at you. He always gets back to you a.s.a.p. If it wasn´t for Phil Shaw I would never have become the safe confident driver that I am today. So I want to say a massive thank you now Phil As not only did you do a good job at teaching me to drive but you also made it so much fun. I will cherish some if not all of my driving memories I have like when we saw a man on a bicycle with a parrot on his shoulder driving down towards Morrisons. Strange but true. lol . my only regret about passing my Driving test is that I won´t get to take driving lessons anymore with Phil.I gonna love ya and leave it here cause otherwise I could drown on forever but you already know there´s no shutting me up ay Phil lol Stay safe and stay true. your number 1 driving student Debra Millward x x x

´Phil is far more than just a driving instructor. You can tell he´s so passionate about teaching. I´m so pleased I chose Phil and would recommend him to anyone. He´s great at boosting the confidence of new drivers and totally believes in your abilities. If he can get me through a test, he can get anyone through a test :)

Phil is not only an exceptional driving instructor, he is also fantastic at inspiring confidence in his pupils.
I started off nervous after struggling to drive a car in the past, through patience and motivation Phil transformed me into a safe and sure-footed driver. His focus on improving hazard perception allows learners to easily understand and predict the dangers on the road. One of the most prominent aspects of his teaching technique is constant communication and feedback, on approach to junctions he will guide you through all the steps necessary to safely carry out the manoeuvre. As the lessons progress he holds back, allowing you to become accustomed to judging a situation by yourself.
Phil is also fantastic company in the car and available at any time via email or by phone.
I will miss the fun of the lessons and wish all his students the very best.

Learning to drive with Phil has been a great experience, I always felt relaxed with him and he’s super easy to talk and calmed my nerves every time that I had a little panic. He was supportive in every way, from giving me useful tips for when I would be out on my own, dropping a text when I’d had a good lesson and even helping me sort out difficult situations I was facing away from driving! Phil went the extra mile that other friend’s instructors certainly didn’t, this included the lesson briefings after lessons and the theory test pro which was a great tool when preparing for my theory test. Phil is always so enthusiastic in the car and when I finally was able to do a left reverse he was just as over the moon as I was; to have someone that it there to encourage you as well has teach you to learn to drive has been incredible, Phil has so much passion for teaching and this really comes across in the car, he doesn’t just want to get you through your test, but give you the skills that will enable you to safely drive and drive well once you are out on the road on your own. The confidence that I have gained in my own ability, both in driving and other aspects have been down to the continued support Phil has given me since I began to drive with him the February. I can’t thank him enough for the vital skills that I have been taught and are helping me every time I go out in the car. Actually going to really miss lessons with Phil, despite the thrill of being able to now drive on my own. Thank you for everything Phil!!

Phil has been the best driving instructor ever. I have always felt that him teaching people to drive is more like his passion than his job, and every time you get something right for the first time such as a manoeuvre, he gets the same buzz as you do! He has always been supportive and encouraging and always taught me to believe in my ability to drive. Not only is he an amazing instructor, he is also someone you know you could talk to about anything because hes always there to listen and try to understand. The extra support outside of the lessons was also so helpful as he gives you a lesson briefing and handouts after every lesson which you can go over and reflect on, and the theory test pro helped me to pass my theory test first time! So thanks Phil for all the support and all the fun, miss you already!
